Shopify Opens Checkout to Browser-Based AI Agents
Shopify now lets AI agents complete purchases directly in a shopper's browser — a milestone for agentic commerce and a signal that checkout is the next frontier for automation.

Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on its merchants'' stores, moving agents beyond product search and cart-building into the final, most sensitive step of a transaction.
The capability rests on two emerging standards: a server-to-server protocol for agents that transact on behalf of a buyer, and the proposed WebMCP standard for agents operating inside the buyer''s own browser. Together they sketch a future where a customer''s assistant can research, compare, and buy — with the buyer''s approval — without ever leaving the conversation.
For merchants, the opportunity is conversion: fewer abandoned carts, faster repeat purchases, and a new channel where the "customer" is increasingly software acting for a person. The open questions are trust and control — how agents authenticate, how spending limits are enforced, and who is liable when an agent buys the wrong thing.
The takeaway for operators: agentic commerce is no longer theoretical. Businesses selling online should start thinking about how their catalogs, policies, and checkout flows read to a machine, not just to a human.
