Simons Foundation, OpenAI and Anthropic Commit $15M to Verify AI-Generated Math
A $15M joint initiative from the Simons Foundation, OpenAI and Anthropic will fund workshops, standards and compute to help mathematicians verify AI-generated research.
What happened
The Simons Foundation announced a $15 million initiative — funded jointly with OpenAI and Anthropic — to help the mathematics community evaluate and build on AI-assisted research. Announced October 16, the program will pay for workshops that help researchers check AI-generated proofs, training on new tools, forums to set shared standards, and compute access for foundation-supported scientists.
The money will be awarded through an open call. OpenAI said its share is $5 million plus model and compute access; Anthropic's contribution was not itemized.
Foundation president David Spergel put it plainly: as AI rapidly reshapes research, the mathematical community needs to come together and forge the best path forward.
The problem they are solving
Last week, OpenAI released 722 AI-generated manuscripts — and many mathematicians said the flood of machine-generated proofs overwhelmed peer review. AI can now generate plausible mathematical arguments at industrial scale, but producing a convincing answer is not the same as proving it is correct.
This is the verification gap in miniature: AI's output capacity is exploding while human review capacity is fixed. The initiative is the labs paying to build the review infrastructure their own technology has outgrown.
What this means for your business
Every industry has its own verification gap. Marketing teams drowning in AI-generated copy, finance teams reviewing AI-flagged transactions, lawyers checking AI-drafted contracts — the pattern is the same: generation is cheap, verification is expensive. Budget for the human review layer before you scale AI output.
Standards are becoming a moat. Whoever defines what counts as a reliable AI result shapes the market. Watch how the math community builds its evaluation standards — your industry's equivalent (AI content audits, AI-generated code review standards, AI financial analysis guidelines) will emerge next, and the companies that adopt them early earn trust faster.
AI plus expert judgment beats AI alone. The initiative funds mathematicians, not just machines. The winning formula is the same one AI POP sells: AI does the volume, experts do the verification.
What to watch
The open call for proposals — it will reveal where the funding actually goes and which verification methods the field considers serious. And whether other industries (medicine, law, finance) launch parallel verification programs, which would confirm this as a cross-industry trend rather than an academic one-off.
