pubX raises $5M and buys Compliant to let AI agents buy and sell ads directly
The ad industry is getting its agent-to-agent moment. On October 6, pubX — a New York and London startup building infrastructure for advertising AI agents — announced a $5 million Series A led by Chicago Ventures and the acquisition of Compliant, a media quality and governance company founded by former Unilever and P&G executives.
pubX builds the agents that plan, buy, sell, and optimize advertising — plus the infrastructure they transact on. Its buyer agents and seller agents work directly with one another, from campaign brief to reporting, across every channel, so more of every dollar reaches the media and publisher behind it. Compliant brings media-quality and governance signals, including its Data Integrity and CTV Quality Indexes, into every agent decision. Compliant CEO Jamie Barnard becomes pubX's President of Global Demand Growth, leading expansion across agencies and advertisers.
### Built on the open Ad Context Protocol
The platform is built on the open Ad Context Protocol (AdCP), designed so buyer and seller agents can transact regardless of which systems each side runs. Governance is embedded rather than bolted on: clients set how much autonomy agents receive, keep approval rights at key stages, and get traceable, auditable agent decisions with checks on every purchase.
pubX planned to demonstrate a live agent-to-agent media purchase on October 7 during Advertising Week New York, running a campaign for Reckitt's Mucinex brand — a public stress test of the model.
### Why it matters
Programmatic advertising already automated the plumbing of ad buying. Agents finish the job: reading the full brief every time, negotiating, optimizing, and reporting without human latency. The acquisition matters because trust is the bottleneck — advertisers won't hand spend to agents without governance, and pubX now owns both sides of that equation.
### What this means for your business
Agent-to-agent commerce is coming to your ad spend. Whether or not you buy media programmatically today, takeaways:
- Prepare for agent-readable media plans. As buyer agents enter the market, briefs and inventory need machine-readable context. Start structuring your campaign data now. - Governance is non-negotiable. Any agent touching your budget must operate under your rules, with approval gates and audit trails. Make that a vendor requirement, not a nice-to-have. - Watch the Mucinex demo results. A successful live campaign proves agents can handle real money with real brands. Follow-up performance data will show whether this is a demo or a business model. - Publishers: your inventory is about to be negotiated by machines. Make sure your pricing and quality signals are visible to the agent protocols, not just human sales teams.
